This morning I started to drive around the East and North sides of the Oahu coastline.
I made a quick stop at the Hālona Blowhole, but it was not shooting any water into the air. It was a nice scenic overlook without any hiking involved. I did get a warning from the police about my mask, which I had taken off to take some pictures and only took 2 steps before putting it back on.
The next stop was a hike up to the Makapu`u lighthouse. It is a smooth paved path up the the lighthouse, but the elevation increases 450 feet. The view was certainly worth it. The view of Koko Head and the ocean with Rabbit Island, a bird sanctuary island as well as barely visible – Maui, Moloka`i, and Lanai. It’s only 26 miles to Moloka`i and 66 miles to Maui from Oahu.
After the hike I found a place called Pan’s Kitchen. They don’t have a website (at least not at the moment), but they had a selection of Japanese dishes like Chicken Katsu, Udon noodles and more. I had the Mochiko Chicken and Shoyu Pork which came with rice and macaroni salad and the Udon. The food was very good. The Udon noodles were very soft and delicious.
I continued along the shoreline and stopped at Kualoa regional park. I flew the drone up close to the ridges and got a few nice videos and pictures. I might have to revisit the park to get some more. It is really a beautiful area.
I continued to drive along the north shore because the waves were supposed to be high today. There wasn’t really big waves, but there was some good waves to be seen. I stopped at Alligator Rock first which the surf report said was the best conditions, then another park a little further down before returning to Waimea Bay Beach.
The Waimea Bay beach had large (8-12 feet) waves breaking on the beach. It looked like a lot of fun to be tossed around by the ocean. I stayed until sunset as the sun set just to the north of the western most point of Oahu.
