I set my alarm clock early to get the included breakfast and managed to sleep through the alarm (assuming I set it properly). By the time I woke up it was late – like noon late. I have been burning the wick at both ends, so it is understandable.

When I did leave the hotel it was nearly 1 PM and I did no pass go, collect $200 or get lunch. I took the bus to Amsterdam Centraal and made a quick stop on the top of the NEMO museum which overlooked today’s choice of museum – the National Maritime Museum.

The entrance fee for the National Maritime Museum was a bit high, 17.50 Euros.

figured this was a good option as I haven’t visited it before and the Dutch are famous for the East Indies and West Indies trading ships. The museum had a replica of one of the VOC (East Indies) ships that you could walk through. I walked through the VOC replica ship first.

I took some pictures of one of the old steam ships.

I went inside the special boat house for the royal barge.

I managed to finish exploring the museum in just under 3 hours without rushing. They did provide a free audio guide, but there wasn’t many parts of the museum that used it.

I took some more pictures of the ship from outside the museum.

I tracked down a Spar (grocery store) and got something to drink. During this time I accidentally found the National Holocaust memorial. There were bricks with names and dates of birth of those who were killed and a shiny mirror on the top.

I also walked around the outside of the botanical garden, which was closed by the time I arrived, but they wanted 12 Euros to enter. I have a hard time believing it was worth 12 Euros. I found a small free park across the street which had a Auschwitz memorial.

I walked over to Rembrandt Square which looked familiar to me for some reason (I have been to Amsterdam many times before).

At this point I started to search for something to eat. I found a highly rated Greek restaurant and ordered a Gyro. It was acceptable, but in all reality it wasn’t up to par with the Greek food I get in Houston.

A few more photos of the canal near the restaurant.

After this I took the metro back to Amsterdam Centraal and I took some pictures nearby the ferries.

I then took bus 48 back to the hotel where I organized myself for tomorrow’s cruise.

Today’s timeline:

I was up so late that I actually saw the Holland American Line ship sail past my hotel window.
