This morning I drove up to Fredericksburg for the weekend. It’s supposedly in what they call ‘Hill Country’, but apparently the people who came up with the name lived in West Texas where you can see for 100 miles if you stand on top of a tuna can…
On the way I stopped at the Capitol in Austin. It was really quiet (closed due to the novel coronavirus of 2019).

I checked into the hotel – Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott. The room is pretty typical of their properties.

For lunch I ate at the Auslander. It certainly looks like Germany with the half-timbered structure. I tried the Kasewurst and the Schnitzel Weiner Art.

After lunch I took a brief stroll through downtown.

The wine tasting room for Grape Creek Vineyards was shut down, but it had tasting at the vineyard. I drove the 10 miles to the Vineyard. They were very proud of their wines (charging quite a bit for wine made in Texas, but I suppose Texas has the world’s best wine – right France?). I also took the drone up to get some photos and video of the vineyard.

I attempted to stop at Fort Martin Scott on the way back into town. I did spend a few minutes at the Texas Ranger Heritage Center (almost museum). By the time I got to the fort it was raining.

Comes the world-class Texas Rangers Heritage Center – dedicated to Building Better Citizens of our Youth – for our State, our Nation and our World.

I drove into town where it had stopped raining (briefly) to Marketplatz and the Vereins Kirche. Apparently this is a replica (built in the 1930’s) of the original church, but was built almost identically to the original. It’s a small museum (but the entry fee is also small, only $2.50)

There were some nice flowers in the back of the church and a massive number of butterflies. I took some pictures of the butterflies.
The skies opened back up. I went back to the hotel for a little while before heading for dinner.
For dinner I went to the Backwoods BBQ. It wasn’t spectacular, but definitely edible. Unless you are desperate for BBQ, I am sure you can find other places to eat that are better.

The rain kept coming, so it was time to call it a day. More adventures tomorrow and more drone footage.
